Regional Planning for Increasing Vehicle and Freeway Automation

This year, NCTCOG issued a request for proposals to procure planning experts who will guide the region in a planning exercise focused on vehicle and highway automation. The planning exercise is expected to kick off later this year.

Integrating CAV Technology, Emergency Response, & Roadway Data on IH-30

North Texas is participating in TxDOT's Texas Connected Freight Corridor (TCFC) project with a focus on IH-30 between Dallas and Fort Worth. The IH-30 projects include integrating Waze data into 911 call centers along the corridor, testing both DSRC and C-V2X communications, and developing a protocol for automated trucks to share data with public agencies about roadway infrastructure challenges they encounter.

North Texas Center for Mobility Technologies

In 2020, NCTCOG will be assisting in the formation and operation of the North Texas Center for Mobility Technologies (NTCMT). The NTCMT is a research network of local universities that will work together on mobility-related research and development projects sponsored by private industry. This research work may extend into mobility-related projects with defense industry implications through NCTCOG’s partnerships with the DFW defense manufacturing community

Distributed Agent-Based Traffic Lights (DALI)

City of Richardson is collaborating with the University of Texas at Dallas in the research focused on traffic signal timing systems. Distributed Agent-based Traffic Lights (DALI), a novel fully collaborative, smart and autonomous, agent-based traffic signal timing system leverages existing traffic signal controllers with dedicated software agents for each intersection that analyze historical and live traffic data, and cooperatively develop and execute timing strategies to improve traffic flow in real-time. DALI offers a plug-in AI-based software solution that is scalable to a regional network.
